The 21st Annual Tour of the Gila bicycle race, May 2 to 6, brings hundreds of the world's best bicycle riders and teams to Grant County.

With support from state, county and local government agencies, Grant County businesses and thousands of spectators every year, the Tour of the Gila has grown in stature and prize money to become one of the premier destinations on the bicycle racing tour.

With the support of those groups and the New Mexico Tourism Department, the 2005 race significantly elevated the race's national competitive rank, increased the overall prize money, and was a tremendous tourism draw the community. This year's race plans to build on this increased visibility and stature in the professional cycling world, with more riders and prize money.

Unlike most races of this stature, the Tour of the Gila includes divisions for all skill levels, as well as spectator activities for all ages and abilities. The top men's and women's divisions race for five consecutive days, covering 340 and 258 miles, respectively.

The Tour of the Gila began in 1987 and has become part of USA Cycling's national event calendar. It is recognized internationally, with participants from Canada, New Zealand, Germany, Russia, Mexico, Colombia, and Australia. Co-sponsors of this year’s event include Holiday Inn Express of Silver City, Gila Hike and Bike, Gila Regional Medical Center, Tim Schoeny, Zia Publishing, International Association of Firefighters Local 2430, Prudential Silver Properties, New Belgium Brewing, Western New Mexico Telephone Company, Isaac’s Bar, Sparks Clinic, Porter Food Marts-Chevron, Comfort Inn, Phelps Dodge Mining Company, Southwestern Bone and Joint Institute, 1st New Mexico Bank of Silver City and Wells Fargo.
